 Children's Services

At Miner Family Dentistry we are committed to your whole family.  We welcome even the littlest members of your family with open arms.

We realize not all dentists like to work with children and know how important those first visits are in developing a strong opinion of going to the dentist.  That's why we welcome all children even if their parents choose another dentist for their own care.

We have been working hard with the other dentists in Hays as well as PATHS and Hays Head Start to ensure all children in the community have a dental home by the age of 1 year old.  It is our goal that all children in western Kansas have access to dental care.

We follow the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dental Association guidelines for timing of the first dental visit and recommend that children be seen on their first birthday.  This Lap to Lap exam is a great introduction for the parent, child and dentist.

Going to the dentist can be fun.  At Miner Family Dentistry we strive to make the dental check up both fun and educational.  We are committed to your child's dental well being and will try to make the visit a positive one for you and your child.  No child is too challenging, and we have seen it all.  Most kids do better than the parent expects.

Common Children's Dental Services

Stainless Steel Crowns - when a baby tooth is badly damaged it may need a crown.  These baby tooth crowns are made of stainless steel and are a silver color.  They come in a variety of different sizes.  The tooth is shaped to accept the crown and a strong glue is used to keep the crown from coming off.  It is recommended that sticky candies like taffy, caramel, tootsie rolls and sugary gum be avoided on a capped tooth to prevent it from coming unglued.  If one does come off simply save the crown and have it glued back on within about 2 weeks.

Pulpotemy- a pulpotemy is a nerve treatment done on a baby tooth.  Usually the tooth has a cavity that is large and is starting to infect the tooth.  The diseased part of the nerve is removed and the tooth is treated with a medication to kill any bacteria left.  Then a filling material is placed in the hole of the tooth.  Then it is usually recommended that a stainless steel crown be placed over the tooth to protect it from chipping and breaking.

Space Maintainers - when a baby molar tooth is lost early a space maintainer is recommended.  space maintainer spacemaintainer holds space permanent the permanant tooth that is growing down in the bone.  With out this space holder the other teeth can crowd out the forming tooth and make it hard for it to fit into it's place in the mouth.

Sealants - sealants are a liquid white or clear filling material that is placed on a cavity free chewing surface on permanent molar teeth to keep bacteria and debris from causing cavities in the top of the tooth.  It is painless to apply and should be placed at about age 6-7 and again about age 12-13.  Sealants do need to be touched up periodically to keep them in working order.

 Hospital Dentistry

We understand that cavities can happen to the littlest people.  In these cases it is unreasonable to expect the young child to sit still through dental work.  We offer hospital sedation dentistry at Hays Medical Center for these special people in our lives.  For children under the age of 6 years old with many cavities hospital dentistry is a more comfortable and relaxing approach.  Dr. Melinda has been working with Hays Medical Center since 2000 and has completed well over 1500 sedation cases.  If you have a child in need of hospital dental services and were referred to Wichita or Kansas City please ask your family dentist for a referral to Hays.  Click here for a referral form.
